Even though taking a vacation or even just a
short turnaround trip can be full of excitement and adventure, the fact is that if you are having trouble
keeping your energy levels up or beating the lingering jet lag, it can really
dampen the fun for you and everyone that you are traveling with. So in the
spirit of making your next vacation the best one ever, we compiled a short list
of useful tips on how to keep the fires burning and engines turning the next
time you hop a plane to parts unknown:
Embrace
a Healthier Diet
Even though we should already be doing this
anyway, if you haven’t been following the most nutritious eating regimen, now
is the time to start. Eating healthy will not only make you feel better and more energized while you
are awake, it will aid in the sleep process by making digestion much easier and
simple, as well as providing the body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs
to replenish those energy reserves for the following day.
Increase
Exposure to Sunlight
Adding to the amount of natural sunlight you take in does wonders for your vitality. It
also helps to regulate the production of melatonin, an internally produced
sleep aid. Little things like taking your lunch outside, walking or biking to a
nearby destination rather than driving, or early day jogs can all greatly
amplify your intake of sunshine.
Set
Your Body Clock to Your Destination Time Zone
This process should start at least a week before
you take off for your vacation, and even two weeks is possible. If you are
going east you want to set your schedule ahead, or you are traveling west, you
will want to try and set your internal clock back. You can do this by adjusting
your sleep cycle a half hour at a time. Again, if you are going east, you would
go to bed a half hour later and get up a half hour later. You would reverse the
process if you are flying west.
What this does is not only gets your sleep
schedule lined up with your vacation locale, it adjusts your entire circadian rhythm to a new daily timetable. This includes when you get hungry and
take meals, when you wind down or get a second wind, as well as dozens of other
biological regulatory processes.
Forget
About Work
This is as important as anything else on our
list. Nothing will zap your energy and enthusiasm for the adventures in store
for you on vacation quite like worrying about work or stressing over an unfinished report or
project. Those things will all still be waiting on you when you get back. For
now, this is a time for you to focus on and enjoy the people that you are
traveling with.
It is a time to be caught up in the thrill of the moment and to refresh
and reset from all of those things that you need a vacation from in the first
place. Don’t waste precious minutes off of what could be the trip of a lifetime
by worrying about things that really don’t matter in the long run
