Have you ever imagined yourself
as a kid scratching all day for no apparent reason? That was what I can
remember decades ago when I had my first and last lice infestation. If my
memory serves me right, I got it from our nannies when we shared combs and they
were the ones also who had hard time of removing it. There was no other means
of removing it aside from the magic suyod. I was thankful though that they
didn’t do harsh things on my crowning glory but dealt with it in a gentle way.
But did you know that it has
become a problem with most of the school children? Most of them are in public
elementary schools wherein there is proper information dissemination yet. It
primarily affects their studies and eventually become a social stigma and to
the extent that it has become a reason for bullying amongst others.
But first let us first know some
facts about lice infestation or pediculosis in medical term.
- It can lay as much as 100 eggs.
- Their eggs can hatch after 7 days
and can lay another 100 eggs. So that will be 700 in total. WHAT?!?
- They can live up to 3 days if
they are not in someone’s head. It means they can still be alive if dislodged
somewhere in those combs/brushes and could still possibly be transferred to
someone’s head. But please note though that they don’t have wings, they only
crawl.
- Most of the females are the one
affected by pediculosis.

Mommy Blogger Lani shares her experiences with lice infestation |
Starting this September, Lamoiyan
Corporation’s Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo will be conducting
Nationwide Oplan Alis Kuto as a part of its Kilusang Kontra Kuto effort to
educate the public on lice infestation issues. The Licealiz caravan will travel
to different schools and barangays all over the country to hold shampooing
programs and lectures for students and their parents.
A survey of communities visited
by the Licealiz caravan last year found that 47% of respondents from Visayas
and 76% of respondents from Mindanao said that their children were bullied and
teased for having head lice, causing some of them to miss school to avoid their
peers. The parents, on the other hand, feel incompetent and embarrassed for
being unable to prevent head lice from infesting their children.
