Hopeless to Thankful

It was nearly 1700h when the Pope was in Quirino Grandstand

and everyone in the house were all eyes on the television watching the mass and at the same time awed by the huge crowd. The kids as usual were playing inside the room. I was busy; folding the clothes and watching TV at the same time. Little did we know that the most dreadful two hours of my life is going to happen.

The kids were playing tug-of-war with the flat iron’s cord. Yes, you read it right. I had no idea how they get to pull it off but the sharp edge fell already on my son’s nasal sinus. Then on a split second I saw the flat iron on the floor. He ran to the other room and thinking I will be very furious about it.

After several seconds, he came back with blood oozing from his left nose and I immediately rushed to him and grabbed anything cold from the freezer. I applied ice pack. But during those moments, my mind went blank as to what to do next while doing the ice compression. I was thinking of calling my aunt but we had no signal yet and the Pope was still out in Quirino. After three paper towels all stained with blood, I thought of rushing him to the hospital. The problem lies again with its location, it was near the area where roads were still closed. So I had no choice but to rush him to the nearest one, which was my former workplace. It was mixture of emotions since I know my son will be in good hands and at the same time my worry was the cash that I need to bring! All I had was P500 peso bill and the rest of my cash was in the bank! God indeed was good because my cousin who was with us that time had extra cash on hand and she willingly lent it to me. It was raining and hard to get a cab that time. But after few minutes, my nephew who I asked to get a cab few blocks away came back with one. Still felt blessed.

We went to the ER and went directly to the triage area. Good thing there was one patient that needed EENT consult and asked if my son could go directly there too. We were sent to the EENT area and it was only the time I had calmed down. The cellphone signals were also back and I had the chance to call my aunt, my mom and Boboy who unfortunately was out of town. His flight was always delayed due to the typhoon in the south. He was already seen by the EENT Resident and ordered an x-ray. I felt relief knowing the hospital was equipped with top of the line equipments to diagnose patients accurately. True enough the x-ray department had changed a lot. My son didn’t even fuss when it was his turn because the RadTechs handled my son so well and x-ray machines were digital already.

After informing us the x-ray results were normal and handed us out the prescription, it was only the time it dawned on me that the last stop was the cashier. It really was a two-hour-dreadful moment for my pocket and me. But despite being broke, I can never really pay the price of my peace of mind as well as my son’s safety.

I am okay now, Mama.

It felt like I was responsible for the accident that happened. That time where signals were blocked, I could be mad at whoever did it. But I didn’t, because I know God has been good and He provides. True enough, I felt we were never left alone, that my son was okay.

Thank you, Lord.
