I Love Weekends

Weekdays are busy days for me. These are days for my never-ending chores, mom duties and blogging. I also get to teach the kids few informal lessons and practice their fine motor skills and also limited screen time. But for two days in a week, I try my best to make them busy having fun and just be kids. And these two days are the so-called weekends. When I was a kid I always look forward to weekends because it was the time I get to play all day long and watch cartoons. If given also a chance, we watch movies in cinemas and dine out in fastfood chain and just spend the usual family day.

I love weekends. Who doesn’t anyway?

I am sharing with you my top three reasons why I look forward to it.

Rest Days. Who says SAHMs doesn’t deserve a rest day? As what I have mentioned, weekdays are the busiest for me so I try to allot two days in a week to be carefree wherein I can just close my eyes for the towering laundry, dirty dishes at the sink, tons of unfolded clothes and messy floor. If I cannot have a pampering sesh at least I freed my hands from the mundane chores at home and spend a not-so me-time.

Cheat Days. When I was kid I always look forward for weekends because it was the time when I get to eat ice cream at play with my siblings and cousins. Now, I also want my kids to experience the same thing. I try my best to treat them with ice cream on weekends so that they have something to look forward to. It may not be the ice cream per se but the thought of us spending time with each other is the most important part. I also try not to keep the kitchen so busy and as I said in number 1, I allot weekends for rest day and just eat take out foods or dine out. I also let the kids watch their favorite sesame street CD’s and cartoons.

Gadget-free Days. I must admit that I am quite guilty on this part. I need schedule as to when to hold the Ipad, cellphones and the laptop and at least minimize the time spent on social media and online games. In my pursuit of setting a good example to my kids, I also need to discipline myself. But I am slowly getting there. I remembered one family which I observed while I was on queue at a certain fastfood chain yesterday. The father was holding a tablet and from afar, it appears he was busy with social media. The kids on the other hand were also preoccupied with their smartphones. When the mother joined them, few minutes later she was also holding her tablet and made herself busy with it. For thirty minutes that I have been observing them, they only spoke few times and my guess; it was only due to the food they ordered and again the social media. I felt bad about it for some reasons. One, the time they spend with each other should somehow be spend having a good conversation with their teenage children. The parents are setting example that there is no place that they could get their hands on their gadgets other than communicating. I may not know their reasons but what I know is they are missing a huge percentage of their lives.

How about you? What do you look forward to on weekends? Share yours.
