48 Photos : Week 7 Architecture

Architectural photography is a specialized photography of buildings and similar structures that are both aesthetically pleasing and are accurate representations of their subjects. This photography is chiefly concerned with the accurate portrayal of the structure than the artistic merit.

However, and much like any other photographic discipline, it is for me more akin to an applied science where the artistic inclinations of the photographer should be given much leeway in order for him to create his own applications, and so it goes “to each his own” in this genre of photographing.

I am not a pro nor is a hobbyist, I just enjoy taking pictures of anything and everything there is to take pictures at. In this enjoyable state, I have always been intrigue by how architectural subject’s aura is affected by the play of the light especially during the night. How a seemingly harmless building becomes a haven of fear during the night, notice how most structures that are not well lit gives you the creeps… well I wanted to capture a picture that embodies such feeling, but time never gave me the opportunity to do so, thus here’s a more lively attempt on night time architectural photography. Here’s hoping though that someday I will be able to share with you a picture with a more dramatic flareand inching towards “the creeps” if not a total creep show.

The subject herein is the Meralco building, which is located inside the meralco compound and is facing Ortigas Avenue and the business district. It was and is still is considered one of the more prominent buildings in the area.
The Meralco building, which has retro architecture, houses the Meralco Theater. The theater is a favorite venue for musical plays. The theater, which can accommodate 1,000 persons, has a revolving stage more than six meters in diameter, an orchestra lift that can accomodate a 60-piece ensemble and full sound, lighting and projection equipment. Aside from musical plays, Meralco Theater also holds classical concerts, ballet and even movie premiers. (wiki) the theater was once known as Meralco auditorium.
Jose Maria Zaragosa designed the Meralco Theater. It was inaugurated on March 22, 1969. The theater is still considered as one of the most modern and fully equipped theaters in the country. Its capacity is half of that of the CCP, but meralco theater is arguably with better acoustics, Aurelio Jugillon, former dean of the UP College of Architecture was the acoustic designer and he used the theater as an example of good acoustics. The building’s inauguration was marked by performances of the Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow with renowned dancers Raisa Struchkova, Alexander Lapuri, Boris Khoklov, and Vladimir Levashev. (source

Oh by the way, noticed the unfinished building in the left most portion of the picture, that was suppose to be the central subject of the shot but somehow it didn’t work out the way it was envisioned so this picture became the final cut, PEACE y’all.

Lastly, here are some tips on the theme:
