Married Life

Fingers intertwined and enjoying the salty breeze of the beach, waiting for the sun to slowly set and emits its golden yellow color and slowly reflects on the water. The bride, wearing a simple white flowy long backless dress with light blue rosette embellishments at the lower back with a flower crown as headdress wearing a light glowing make up. The groom, wearing a simple white shirt and light cream beach pants as their barefoot feet touches the sand and it’s fine texture. Inside the tent there are few chosen family members that are waiting inside while waiting for the priest to initiate the wedding. Bamboo torches are lit with light that gives dramatic light to grace the sunset wedding by the beach.

Yes, I dreamed of a beach wedding before. I dreamed of a simple yet close to nature kind of wedding with few chosen family members and friends to celebrate with. It was but a dream I left in my deep sleep. It never came into realization. Not just yet.

Few days from now marks my third year of being Mrs. J, the day I signed my name across his in front of our witness and the pastor and exchanged our vows. We were busy couples few years back (he still is) so we could ever hardly find time to prepare for the wedding and opted for a simple one. We were very preoccupied aside from our important event in our life that it almost got cancelled! It was a simple one that after the exchange of vows we went separate ways to our duties. He rushed back to his office to finish deadlines and I went to pick up my patient at the airport. Nothing fancy, just a banana cue snack to satisfy my cravings.

We never really get to celebrate our so-called anniversary or at least give a little spark to it. It is purely the same monthsaries that we get to mark our calendars and commemorate on the same date of the months.

In the years of being a Mrs. J there are few things that I learned from our not so perfect relationship as partners—in laughter, sorrows, difficulties and endeavors.

Acceptance. The best key to start a relationship is to accept the new and leave behind the past. When you unburden yourself with too much of your past then you have finally found the right time to begin a new relationship with your new partner. Your partner is a different individual so don’t expect that all things will come your way. Sometimes there are infuriating things that you were once blinded by it because of love but in the end you are bound to accept the faults and flaws. They say, “old habits die hard” but what you can do is somehow to remind your partner of it. Other than that, it only means you marry their weaknesses as well as strengths.

Humility. “Love is not boast but is kind.” You can’t be right always even if we know we are, but things doesn’t work that way always. We need to set aside our own pride/s because f we do, the more we will make things difficult for each other.

Respect. When we became partners every decision we made especially when it comes to house and children needs to be discussed. We also need to respect each other’s opinions about different matters in life.

Love. Love unconditionally without he if’s and but’s. Give your heart wholeheartedly. Love every aspect of your partner not just the good but also the bad.

Compromise. A person should complement your partner’s weaknesses as well as the strengths. We cannot take all the love and never love our partners back. It is a vicious cycle that we shouldn’t break or else a misunderstanding will arise from it.

Truth. No matter how hurtful it is, truth is always the only thing that will set you free.

Communication. It is the most important key to a relationship in order for it to work. We should open not just our minds as well as our ears and hearts. We can never understand our partner if we only listen to what our minds dictate our hearts. Let us try to be empathic because each of us has it's unique way of dealing of matters in life.

What is the important thing you learned from relationships? Would like to hear it.
